EMRC Hosts IAEA Mission to Review Nuclear Safety, Radiation Protection Framework

Amman, Nov. 5 (Petra) -- The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) is hosting an Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Jordan's national legislative, regulatory and oversight framework for nuclear safety and radiation protection.

EMRC Chairman Ziad Saayedeh said hosting the mission reflects Jordan's commitment to strengthening the effectiveness and independence of its regulatory system and subjecting it to a specialized international review. The assessment provides an opportunity for an objective evaluation of the regulatory framework and existing practices, while drawing on international expertise to identify areas for improvement and development, ensuring the highest standards of safety and the protection of people and the environment.

According to an EMRC statement issued Thursday, the mission comprises 14 international experts and will continue through Nov. 10. This week's activities included technical meetings, document reviews, discussions and field visits to several government entities and institutions operating in Jordan's nuclear and radiation-related sectors.

The mission is examining national practices and assessing the legislative and regulatory frameworks, licensing procedures, inspection and oversight mechanisms, as well as coordination and cooperation among the relevant authorities.

At the conclusion of its work next week, the mission is scheduled to present its main findings, observations and recommendations.

The review, which began on Oct. 31, builds on ongoing cooperation between Jordan and the IAEA in the field of regulatory assessments. Jordan hosted an international follow-up mission in 2017 to evaluate progress in implementing the recommendations and suggestions made by an earlier review mission conducted in 2014.

This continued cooperation reflects Jordan's ongoing efforts to develop its regulatory system, enhance its efficiency and align its practices with the best international standards and practices.
